A very early start in order to gain as much height as possible in the cool of the morning. Sun hats and a large water in-take are essential. Descend by the same route.
Great care should be taken on the way down: loose volcanic gravel on bare rock makes it perilous going in places. Overnight at the Lake Natron camp site.

OLDOINYO LENGAI TOUR
OL DOINYO LENGAI is a Volcanic attraction here at Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is the 3rd highest mountain in Tanzania, rising about 2,960 m (9,711 ft.) It is located in the eastern part of the Great Rift Valley and is the only active volcanic mountain in East Africa. This mountain is of particular interest to geologists as it is the only volcano in the entire world that produces natrocabornatite lava. While approaching Ol Doinyo Lengai, sparkly black soiled fields and volcanic rocks lend an extraterrestrial feel. Additionally, it is common to spot herds of zebra, wildebeest or giraffes grazing side-by-side with the thousands of cows, sheep, goats and donkeys owned by the local Maasai people. A quirky and visually stimulating combination not to be missed!
*This hike generally takes 3-5 hours to ascend and 2-3 hours to descend.
*The ideal time to begin this hike is around 2 a.m. so that you may reach the peak at dawn to enjoy both the sunrise and cloudless viewing of the crater.
*Ol Doinyo Lengai hikes can easily be combined with a safari to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. If one prefers a longer trekking experience they can begin in the Ngorongoro Highlands, before summiting Ol Doinyo Lengai.
